Traeger Won't Heat, Shuts Off, or Showing an LEr Error? Here's What's Actually Going On
If your Traeger won't come up to temp, drops out mid-cook, or flashes "LEr" on the controller, you're not alone โ it's the most common pellet-grill call we get, and it's almost always fixable. A Traeger is worth saving: the failures are usually a worn hot rod, a clogged auger, or a tired RTD probe, not a dead grill. Below we'll walk through what's likely wrong, what you can check yourself, and an honest take on repair vs. replace.
What you're seeing
LEr (Low Error) on the controller
LEr means the RTD temp probe read below about 125ยฐF for too long โ the grill thinks the fire went out. On a Traeger it's usually a burned-out hot rod igniter that never lit the pellets, an empty or jammed auger that starved the firepot, or a temp probe that's drifted out of spec. It's a symptom, not a death sentence.
Won't ignite or come up to temp
If the auger turns and pellets drop but nothing catches, the hot rod igniter is the usual culprit โ they wear out and stop glowing after a few seasons. A firepot packed with ash or unburned pellets from past shutdowns will choke the flame the same way.
Shuts off or temp swings wildly mid-cook
Big temp swings and unexpected shutdowns point to an auger that's feeding pellets unevenly, a failing induction fan that can't keep the fire steady, or moisture-swollen pellets bridging in the hopper so the auger spins on an empty pocket.
Auger grinding, stalling, or jammed
A clunking or stalled auger is often a jam โ a screw, a chunk of fused pellets, or sawdust packed tight after the grill sat. Left alone, a jam burns out the auger motor, turning a cleanout into a parts job.
Controller blank, erratic, or WiFire won't connect
A dead or glitchy controller, scrambled readings, or a WiFire that won't pair can stem from a failed controller board, a corroded RTD or meat-probe connection, or a loose harness. Sometimes it's the controller; sometimes it's just a probe feeding it bad data.
How we fix it
When we come out, we work the fire chain in order: we pull and inspect the firepot and clear ash and unburned pellets, test the hot rod igniter to confirm it's still glowing, check the auger motor and clear any jam in the auger tube and hopper, then verify the RTD temp probe is reading accurately and the induction fan is spinning freely โ because an LEr is almost always one of those four, not a new grill. We'll check the controller and WiFire connections and the probe harness while we're in there, since bad probe data fakes a lot of "dead controller" calls. Most of the time it's a hot rod replacement, an auger cleanout, or an RTD swap โ affordable parts on a grill that's very much worth keeping. And here's what most repair outfits skip: we deep-clean the whole cooker in the same visit โ firepot, drip tray, grease channel, and grates โ because caked grease and ash are what kill hot rods and jam augers in the first place. We'll always give you the honest call, and on a Traeger, repair almost always beats replace.
Questions, answered
- What does the LEr error on my Traeger actually mean?
- LEr stands for "Low Error" โ the temp probe read below roughly 125ยฐF for too long, so the controller assumes the fire went out and shuts down to be safe. On a Traeger it's usually a burned-out hot rod that never lit the pellets, an auger that ran empty or jammed, or an RTD probe that's drifted. It's one of the most common and most fixable Traeger problems we see. Send us a photo of the firepot and hopper and we'll tell you which it likely is.
- Is my Traeger worth repairing, or should I just replace it?
- Almost always worth repairing. The parts that fail โ hot rod igniter, auger motor, RTD probe, induction fan, controller โ are all replaceable, and swapping one plus a deep clean costs a fraction of a new pellet grill of the same quality. If the body or hopper is rusted through we'll tell you straight, but on most Traegers that's rare and a repair is the smart call.
- Can you fix the hot rod or auger and clean the grill in one trip?
- Yes โ that's how we work. We come to your home, diagnose the no-heat or LEr issue, replace the hot rod, clear or replace the auger, or swap the RTD probe as needed, and deep-clean the firepot, drip tray, and grates in the same visit. One stop and you're smoking again.
- Why does my Traeger keep throwing LEr in cold weather?
- Cold and wind make it worse: the grill works harder to hold temp, a marginal hot rod or fan can't keep the fire steady, and moisture swells the pellets so the auger feeds unevenly and the firepot can go cold โ which trips the LEr. Dry pellets and a clean firepot help, but if it's recurring, the hot rod or fan is usually on its way out and worth replacing before peak season.
- What areas do you serve?
- We're a veteran-founded local company covering Greater Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky, and the Dayton, Ohio area. We come to you โ driveway, deck, or patio โ repair the grill, and deep-clean it in the same visit.
