Napoleon Grill Won't Ignite? JETFIRE Ignition Troubleshooting & Repair

If your Napoleon won't light โ€” no click, a click with no spark, or that SafetyGlow ignition button glowing while the burners stay cold โ€” you're in the right place. Most Napoleon ignition problems are a fixable part, not a dead grill, and on a Prestige or Rogue the build quality usually makes the repair well worth it. Below we walk through what's actually failing and when it's smart to fix versus replace.

What you're seeing

JETFIRE clicks but no spark reaches the burner

Napoleon's JETFIRE system fires a spark from an electrode tucked into the burner tube. If you hear rapid clicking but never see or smell ignition, the usual culprits are a fouled or grease-coated electrode, a cracked ceramic insulator, or a corroded electrode wire that's bleeding spark before it gets to the tube. Carbon and grease bridging the electrode gap is the single most common cause we find.

SafetyGlow button glows but nothing lights

On grills with the SafetyGlow ignition, the button glows red when the system is energized. A glowing button with no light tells us power is reaching the module but the spark isn't crossing โ€” typically a bad electrode, a broken wire under the control panel, or burners so gummed up the gas can't reach the spark point. It's a useful clue that the battery and module are alive.

No click at all when you press the igniter

Silence usually means the electronic ignition module isn't firing. Start with the AA battery in the module behind the control knob โ€” Napoleon's electronic igniters are battery-powered and a dead or corroded battery kills the whole system. If a fresh battery doesn't bring back the click, the module, button, or wiring harness is the next suspect.

Some burners light, others won't catch

When one or two burners fire but the rest stay cold, the problem is rarely the igniter โ€” it's gas flow. Napoleon's stainless tube burners and the crossover/carryover channel between them clog with grease, spiders, and debris. A blocked tube or carryover tube means the flame can't travel across, so only the burner nearest the igniter lights. This is a cleaning-and-clearing job, and it's one we fix in the same visit.

It lights but flames are weak, yellow, or uneven

Weak, lazy, or yellow flames on a Napoleon point to partially blocked stainless tube burner ports, a clogged venturi, or a regulator stuck in bypass after the tank valve was opened too fast. Grease dripping down through the sear plates onto the burners accelerates the clogging. Left alone it gets worse and can warp the burner โ€” catching it early is the cheap fix.

How we fix it

When we come out, we start by isolating ignition from gas flow โ€” we confirm the JETFIRE or SafetyGlow module is firing (battery, button, electrode gap and spark), then verify the stainless tube burners, carryover tubes, and venturis are actually clear so gas reaches the spark. From there we know whether you need a part (electrode, wire, igniter module, or button) or simply a thorough clearing. Because we repair and deep-clean in the same visit, we pull the WAVE cooking grids and sear plates, degrease the burners and cook box, and clear the carryover channel that grease loves to clog โ€” so the fix lasts instead of failing again next month. We'll always give you a straight repair-versus-replace answer: a Prestige, Prestige PRO, or Rogue is a heavy, well-built grill that's almost always worth saving, while we'll tell you honestly if a rusted-through firebox on a much older unit has reached the end. We don't invent prices โ€” send photos and we'll quote the real work.

Questions, answered

Does the Napoleon JETFIRE igniter use a battery?
Most do. Napoleon's electronic ignition modules run off a single AA battery housed behind the control panel. A dead or corroded battery is the number one reason a Napoleon suddenly stops clicking โ€” always swap it before assuming the igniter has failed.
Why does my JETFIRE click but the burner won't light?
The spark usually isn't reaching the burner. Grease or carbon coating the electrode, a cracked ceramic insulator, or a corroded electrode wire will all let the system click without producing a usable spark. Burners clogged with grease can also keep gas from reaching the spark point. We clean the electrode, check the gap and wire, and clear the burner in one visit.
Is it worth repairing a Napoleon grill or should I replace it?
Napoleon builds heavy, mostly stainless grills, so on a Prestige, Prestige PRO, or Rogue the repair is almost always worth it โ€” these are grills people keep for a decade or more. The honest exception is an older unit with a rusted-through firebox or cracked cook box, where replacement makes more sense. We'll tell you which one you have before you spend a dime.
Do you fix Napoleon grills at my home in Cincinnati or Northern Kentucky?
Yes. We come to you across Greater Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky, and the Dayton area. We diagnose the ignition, make the repair, and deep-clean the grill in the same visit โ€” no hauling it anywhere or dropping it off.
How do I get a price for my Napoleon ignition repair?
Send us a few photos through our free photo quote โ€” the control panel, the burners, and the overall grill. We'll give you a real, no-pressure estimate for the repair and same-visit cleaning based on what we actually see.
